Along with the development of Carousel in Perth, Westfield developed flagship centres in Parramatta in NSW and South Australia’s two major centres, Westfield Marion and Westfield Tea Tree Plaza.
Westfield Carousel was a development project that had been a challenge for over 12-years for Hammerson, Banker’s Trust and Westfield to obtain approval to redevelop. A fresh approach by the Western Australia Westfield team secured government approval for this A$200m+ development and the team were instrumental in creating one of the largest and most successful shopping centre in Western Australia. Opening in 1999, with over 200 shops including Kmart, Target, Coles, Myer and a new Woolworths, Carousel had one of the first integrated and innovative entertainment, leisure and dining precincts across the Westfield portfolio anchored by a relocated Hoyts 14-screen multiplex. Providing for future expansion was a key measure of success and the 2017 A$350mill expansion of the centre by Scentre Group capitalised on this strategic opportunity to add David Jones and further retail, leisure, food and parking to this high performance asset.
The expansion of Westfield Parramatta from 80,000 sqm to 127,000 sqm, made it the largest centre in Australia and introduced a new David Jones, a fresh food level, food court and an expanded Event Cinemas which doubled in size. A new retail bridge was also created bringing together the existing city with the new.
In South Australia, the Westfield team led $A350m expansion of Westfield Marion enlarging it to 120,000 sqm, as well as the expansion of Westfield Tea Tree Plaza. The expansion of Westfield Marion was the largest for the group undertaken at the time and it became the first centre in Australia to house three major department stores and three discount department stores.
